Ansel Adams

Ansel was a photographer and he captured images of the environment, his images are black and white, he doesn't use any colour. This adds to peoples imagination in my opinion as although the image is black and white you can still imagine it in colour.  I like how the tree image and how the shadows look on the rocks, distorted effect due to the compassion. I Like the detail of that is shown in the water photograph, and how the light is shining adding different shades.

Dan Holdsworth

I really like the parking lot, with the lights, looks so simple yet intriguing. The simplicity and how the light stands out better due to the nightfall. I would like to experiment with night time images within my work. I also think the first image is interesting due to the colours and how the roads are light.

Joshua Cooper

He captures interesting images, and he also has them in black and white. He has a lot of photography of water, but the fact they are in black and white it sort of gives them more depth and detail.

Uta Barth

I think these photographs are wonderful, it's very different, and to look at even though out go focus you can still make out what the objects are. When something is light the use of having it out of focus creates a nice circle effect. I think it would be interesting to go around taking images out of focus to see what different outcomes you could receive.

Susan Hiller

I really like how she combines images together to make a final outcome. The more that's added creates a much better final then if were alone, adds more impact to the design itself. Has more relevance and place when combined to others instead of individually.

Cindy Sherman

She uses still images of movies and then photographs herself in them, I thought this was was a really good idea, as able to recreate something different using different medias of film and photography. But she does make it relevant to the background not just to put herself in, it looks as if she was apart of the movie.

David Hockney

I really like Davids work he takes multiple photographs and collages them altogether to make the final outcome. The are different ways he does this, but each way is interesting and works well.

Barbra Kruger

Barba Kruger had an exhibition and to present her work she used a room and a projector and was able to project all of her work big on the wall and floors completely covering the room. This is very different than just hanging her work upon the walls.

Book

Book

I have been asked to produce a book that will reflect my experience of the stretch from Headlands to Seal Sands. I thought that a lot of my final work was based around my poppy and war memorial I would address the history of Hartlepool in relation to the war as it has only recently passed the 100th anniversary of the 1st world war outbreak. The book has to be a combination of imagery and text, then sent away to be professionally printed. I produced a 'Dummy' to help me plan my book, this was just scrap paper that was folded into a book shape so I could work out what can go where and also what pages my double page spread would be on.

Cover

The cover I want very realistic, but I want it very plain. So on that note I had the cover in black as I thought this would be an appropriate colour due to the contents on the book, and the only image I wanted to go on the front was a poppy, so this would contrast well against the backdrop. I only wanted to state the chosen area where I wanted to dedicate my book to be the title (Headland). In relation I don't think it makes that much sense now, maybe Hartlepool would of been better fitting, or the subject matter been a more convenient title, but I have a sub title on the front page that helps inform the reader what sort of information is present inside as links to the war but the book is not exactly about the war but the more on the bombardment of Hartlepool. I think the cover loosely  relates to the contents in the book.
To follow through with realistic look I created the back page black too so wouldn't look out of place. A back of a book is where you would normally find a blurb a short summary about the contents inside the book, I would like my book to have one, just to look professional and realistic.

 Pages

After the cover page I left a blank page, I was going to leave two but I thought I would add a short sentence and a complementary image to go with it. I thought my front cover was very vague to what the book was about so I thought it it be better to add the image of the sign saying Bombardment.

Next two pages, on the right hand side is a brief history/fact page of some of the things related to the bombardment. At first I had ordinary text, as I thought it was approiate due to the style of book and what it is about, but I wanted to try different styles, meaning underlining of works, spreading them out, being in caps, italics or bold. This way I was able to sort of highlight main key factors of the line. I sectioned up the short sentence to break up and place around the page.

This is about the first solider who ever died on British soil, he was killed during action of the Bombardment. I have relevant imagery to go with the texts here. I think It is good to have space sometimes on the page but that might just be my taste.

After I have included the Kings involvement he had on trying to uplift the spirits of Hartlepool people. Then Beside the memorial Wall.

These two pages are of the gun and then all the medals that had been awarded to men that fought during the Bombardment of Hartlepool. At first i had sectioned it off into three bits but to add more visual effect to a page full of text, unlike the other in this book I added in the lines to help section each one off even more but it actually makes a much better different in my opinion.

My double page spread is a bit dark, but I think it is a lovely image of the war monument also the fact it's located on the houses that had been badly damaged during the bombardment and were right on the sea front.

These are some of the plaques that were on the wall in the museum, of the soldiers that fought in the battle on the 16th of december, sadly died in action.

Here is a Poem that was on the wall next to the plaque I thought it would be nice to include in my book, I was going to add poems myself but the fact the museum actually had this one up on a plaque next to the memory plaques I thought it would be nice and better to have this one in my book.

I have another statue taken at dark fall, on the other side I have a scanned image I taken. As for the text it was taken from the each side of the statue and quoted.
I contained another poem in my book, with relevant imagery to go with it. The poppies I had underneath "the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918" but then I thought this is more to do with the great war itself and my book has stuck to about the Bombardment of Hartlepool as I was looking into the history of Hartlepool so I changed it. instead of leaving it to just the image itself I decide to add how there is a memorial service each year on the anniversary of the bombardment and included some of the activities they do on the day.

Research on Bombardment

Research on the Bombardment of Hartlepool

To complete my book on the Bombardment of Hartlepool during the first world war, to gain the right information I went to the Heugh Battery Museum, the people there were a great deal of help, they had a lot of interesting facts they could tell me about the tragic event of that day and also had a book that helped loads with the making of my own book. Here are some of my findings of around the museum and where a lot of my information came from to fill my book to complement the images I had captured.
